Kangra-Introduction

Kangra-History 
In the past, Kangra attracted a lot of plunderers because of the immense wealth stored in Vajreshwari temple. Even Mahmud of Ghazni looted a lot of gold and silver from the temple in 1009 AD. The Tughlaq rulers of the Delhi empire also plundered it in 1360. Till then the area was ruled by the local rulers but later it came into the hands of the British.
Kangra-Sites to Visit
Your tour package would definitely include a visit to the famous Vajreshwari devi temple. The original temple was destroyed in a earthquake, so the new structure was built on the same site. Though it attracts devotees all through the year, the most rush is during the Hindu festivals. Another place worth a visit is Nagar Kot, It is located 2.5kms south of Kangra. Though the fort is crumbling fast, it is still a great place for clicking holiday pictures and seeing the meeting point of Manjhi and Bnaer rivers.

There are lots of temples near Kangra. You can visit Masrur, which is 15kms from Kangra. The small town is famous for a group of 15 sandstone rock cut temples, famous for the beautiful intricate carvings. You can also visit the Jawalamukhi temple, which is 34kms from Kangra. It is an interesting temple, because here you can see natural jets of flame flaring out from the hillside. As you may have already guessed, this is exactly why it is called the Jawalamukhi temple.
Kangra-How to Reach
There is no airport in Kangra, but there are two railway stations. One is Kangra station, which is 3kms away and the Kangra Mandir station. The Indian Railways has introduced the Kangra Queen, which runs between Pathankot and Palampur. This is ideal for tourists who wish to travel by train and enjoy the scenic beauty along the way.
The Kangra Bus stand is located along the Dharamshala Road. There are frequent buses from Dharamsala and Palampur to Kangra.

In the month of April and September, you can enjoy the Navratra festivities. People also flock to Kangra during October to pay homage to the Goddess Durga at the temple.
