Khajjiar - Introduction

Located in the pictorial Chamba valley, the hill resort of Khajjiar is a small lush meadow, which attracts a large number of tourists. A truly spectacular spot, Khajjiar provides opportunities to unravel the mystery of the Himalayas and plays host to the picnickers. Nestled among the verdant hills at an altitude of 1951 m above sea level Khajjiar is a welcome stopover for the weary tourists traveling between Dalhousie and Chamba.

Situated in the northwestern part of the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, Khajjiar is 22 km from Dalhousie and 24 km from Chamba.

Khajjiar - History

Khajjiar once formed part of the famous Rajput rulers of Chamba. It served as the capital of the Chamba rulers in the in the 6th century AD. In the medieval period, it came under the Mughal dominion and various Sikh kingdoms, which followed the former. Finally, it was brought under the control of the British. Today it is in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Khajjiar - Sites to visit

A small grassy meadow (1 × 1 sq km) nestling in the lap of the tall deodar trees, this beautiful place has a small pond at its center. The two floating islands in the center of the pond are marvelous.

Taking its name from the 12th century Khajinag temple dedicated to the to the local Goddess, Khajjiar is one of the most appealing spots in the Himalayas. Also known as the Golden Devi temple, this Khajinag shrine is adorned with a golden dome and spire and attracts pilgrims visiting the Chamba valley.

Khajjiar - Nearby Sites

The picturesque town of Chamba is located 24 km from Khajjiar. Nestled among the Shivalik ranges Chamba is a famous pilgrimage place and is famous for its medieval temples. Some local festivals are celebrated here.

Tours to Dalhousie Dalhousie is another famous hill station located at a distance of 22 km from Khajjiar. It is a popular summer retreat set amongst the lower Himalayan ranges.

Khajjiar - How to reach

A small tourist spot, Khajjiar is accessible only by road. Bus services connect it to different towns in the Chamba valley. Buses from Chamba (1½ hour) and Dalhousie (1½ hour) stop at this picnic spot. Tourists can also reach the place by taxis, which can be hired at both Dalhousie and Chamba. Experience the scintillating beauty of the place strolling through the meadow.

Khajjiar - Best time to visit

Khajjiar experiences mild climate during the summer months of April-June, while the winter is cold. The southwestern monsoon rains lashes the hill resort of Khajjiar in July-September. The best time to visit Khajjiar is between March and June
